Tension as Head of Interpol reported missing after leaving for China

The head of the International Criminal Police Organisation Meng Hongwei has been reported missing by his wife.

Meng Hongwei travelled to China in late September, but his wife says she has not heard from him since.

French police announced his disappearance today and they are leading investigations to find him.

He lives in Lyon where Interpol is based. Meng used to be Vice Minister of Public Security in China, according to Interpol’s website.

He was elected head of Interpol in 2016.

He was born in Harbin, China, in 1953, and graduated from Peking University where he studied law before entering politics in 1972.

He was director of China’s coast guard and appointed deputy director of China’s State Oceanic Administration.

Interpol has offices in nearly every country on the planet and works towards international cooperation between different police forces.

They work together to solve crimes that cross borders, sharing information and pooling resources.

The Interpol website states: ‘Our role is to enable police around the world to work together to make the world a safer place.

‘Our high-tech infrastructure of technical and operational support helps meet the growing challenges of fighting crime in the 21st century.’
