Ebonyi parents disown 24-year-old daughter for refusing to sell her newborn

Ebonyi parents disown 24-year-old daughter for refusing to sell her newborn: A nongovernmental organisation in Anambra State, Safenest, on Monday said it has aborted the plot by a family to force their daughter to sell her baby boy for family upkeep. The executive director of Safenest, Mrs. Oluchukwu Chukwuenyem, stated this at a workshop held in Awka, Anambra State.

The NGO said the family had driven their daughter out of the family house for refusing to heed their advice to sell her baby boy. Chukwuenyem said, “The Family of one Miss Oluchukwu, aged 24, rejected her for refusing to sell her baby boy whom she gave birth to out of wedlock. “Oluchukwu, an indigene of Ebonyi State, whose family resides in Awka Etiti in Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State, was advised to abort the pregnancy because it was out of wedlock, but she refused, insisting on keeping it.

“She was, however, picked up by Safenest after she ran away from home to Awka, Anambra State, where she was later delivered of her baby. “We contacted her family to break the good news of her delivery to them, but they advised her to sell the baby and to never return to the family with it. “We were surprised to hear this, and we have therefore taken it upon ourselves to take care of her and the baby.

“We’ve housed her in a safe location, which we do not want to disclose; but I can tell you that she is doing well. “How much will she sell the baby that will assuage her suffering for nine months?” The NGO noted that domestic violence has been on the increase in recent times, resulting in divorce and murder.
